My hobbits

I am positive and interested in many activities in life.

As for study, I am fond of science subjects, including Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. It is interesting for me to learn the logic methods and theories and apply them in practical life. I feel proud when I successfully deal with the problems. I have studiied Maths, Physics, Biology and Chemistry for years, and really in enjoy the learning process.

In my spare time, I like listening to music and reading. I have learnt guitar for several years and felt happy when I was playing guitar. Music can make people calm down and relaxed. It can cultivate our personality and built our confidence. Reading can increase our knowledge and reduce some mistakes. It helps us  get more opportunities in life and study.

My another hobby is doing sport, especially running. Exercises help me keep fit, prevent lots of illness and built a health body to contribute in study. It also provides me an opportunities to cultivate a patient and positive character and make friends with other people. When I was studying in high school and middle school, I always take part in the school sport meeting and fortunately get a great number of aware.

Myself

My name is TONGRUI WU, and my English name is Victoria. I graduated from Chinese high school, and chose the UK to continue my education. I studied in A-level last year, and decided to transfer to Foundation. I enjoy the study on Business Foundation programme and fortunately got the offer from City University London, which is the school I want to go to.

This is my second year in the UK. During these two year, I love this country gradually. At the first time I have been to Britain, I feel it is too quiet for me to live. Most of the shops close after six o’clock, therefore I cannot go shopping in the evening. This is totally different with my country. There are less people on the road at night. This makes me feel unsafe. However, I am comfortable now as I have already familiar with the environment. People in the UK are also friendly. With the economic development, there are more automatic services. However, this may make people become lazy. I also meet some terrible services and the staffs are very rule.  For example, I choose Royal Mail and spent 60 pound to mail a vital document to my home, but they lost my post and do not give me any apologize and compensate. What is worse, the staff is rude when I call to ask for help. This confuses me and make me sad.

After graduating in university, I will go back my country and hope to be an excellent accountant one day.

Foundation year

I went back to my country China this Easter holiday and went to HONGKONG for a travel with my two best friends. On the first day in HK, we spend nearly one and a half hour to queue up and pass the custom. After that, it took us another hour to Avenue of Star by underground. Fortunately, it is sunshine. My friends and I had a great time to enjoy the landscape of Victoria Harbor. On the afternoon, we took peak tram to the top of the Victoria Peak and overlook the night scene of HK. On the second day, it is raining from midday. We went shopping whole day and finally we were too tired to move.

HONGKONG's Beaches

HONGKONG’s Beaches

I had to go back Britain to continue education on April 12th. I will study accounting and finance in the university. I was born in a family where both parents are running business. Meanwhile, learning mathematics and statistics provides me a logical way of thinking and fosters my interest in Accounting and Finance, so I am determined to study accounting and finance under an academic environment.

From my perspective, students on foundation programme should be concerned with their course works since most of them also take up approximately 30% in the final mark of every subject. Compared with final exam, course work can test students in more detailed aspect since some course works are only focus of one or two topics during the study process, while the final examination cover most of the knowledge of that term. As regards the occasion and time, course works are always held in the classrooms which students are familiar with and the time of course work are more flexible and more likely to change in need, while the final examinations are usually held in special places such as exam hall and they are set

at the relatively fixed time and difficult and less possible to be change.

As regards the distinctions between academic and general English study, the most difference is their requirements of vocabulary. The requirement of Academic English is more rigorous than that of general English. For example, in academic writing, some of the easy vocabulary such as good, should be try to prevent using. Moreover, abbreviations are not allowed in academic writing, while they can be utilized in general English as long as the they can be realized and understood. Another difference is the user of these two kinds of English. People who learn and use academic English are more likely to seek the opportunities in higher education. However, the aim of learning general English is for the daily use, and people who use it are less possible to work in academic environments. Turning to the similarities of academic English and general English, both of them can improve our basic English skill in our life, such as reading newspaper, communicating with the others, getting the information around us.

We attend CIT class this term. In my opinion, this course is related to the knowledge about business and English. For example, it can teach us to organize the data in business when we study how to do an Excel, and it improves our English skills when we do a presentation. The purpose to study this course is to learn how to use computers to make business operation more efficient.

I will try my best to study well.

Reflect all subjects

In this term, I study Business 2, CIT and FES3. In Business 2, now we focus on knowledge about marketing, such as market segmentation and marketing mix. With respect to CIT, we learn a variety of computer skills about business, including making PowerPoint, Excel and creating a blog. As regards FES3, which stands for Foundation English Class, we do some research, collect the useful data , do a presentation and write an essay this term.

There are considerable difference between the courses we learn this term and the subjects we studies last two terms. The largest distinction is the study of business. At the first term, I concentrate on Business 1, which is mainly talk about how to start a business. The key point is to analyze the inner factors of the businesses and to deal with the issues entrepreneurs may meet when they start their businesses. Compared with Business 2, we need to observe the operation of all the market, and combine with the knowledge from Economics. These make Business 2 much more difficult to study than Business 1. As for FES 3, we learn English every term. From my perspective, the content of FES each term is progressive and irreversible. For example, the crucial skill we learn in FES 1 is the structure of the essay, which help us write in a logical and organized way. In FES 2, we focus on taking note and using references of other passage, which teach us how to collect and apply the useful information, and make our writing more convincing. In FES 3, we do some listening practices and write a essay, using the English skills we studied last two terms. I think FES 3 is the most difficult course in these three English courses, as it requires lots of speaking, which is my weakness. Turning to CIT, it is also a challenge subject for us since we do not study in the past time.

During this year studying on Business Foundation Programme, I believe I make a progress with hard working, especially my reading, writing and listening skills. However, there are still a lot of skills needed to improve considerably, such as speaking skill. I am sky and worried about making mistake when I am talking. I felt sad when I cannot talk to other people as the local person. I cannot overcome this problem all the time, but I will not give up. I will try my best to solute this issue and hope I can speak well one day.

During this year, I become more mature and there is a significant shift in my opinion and attitude toward life and study. Before studying in Business Foundation Programme, I did not have a target or aim of my life. I do not recognize what my advantages are, how to utilize them and what I am going to be. This year, I spent many time to think of these problem. Now, I hope I can be one of the most outstanding accountant in my country in the future, with my strong point in maths and other science subjects. I study hard during this year to reach the requirement of the university.

Finally, one of the essential part in my life is friendship. It takes me a long time to study with my classmates and friends this year. We share our opinion and help each other to address the difficult problems. I am quite fortunately to make friends with them and wish that we will be good friend in the whole life. It is sad that we will go to diverse university in next three year, but we will miss each other.

The differences between course work and exam

Compared with the educational system in China, I think the educational methods in the UK is quite different, especially test. When I study in China, the most important test every year is the exam at the end of every term. However, in Britain, besides the exams at the end of the term, course work also plays a vital role in our education. For most Chinese students, course work is a new approach to test what we study and most of them may feel confused when at the beginning of studying in Britain because there is no course work in China.

As regards the occasion and time, course works are always held in the classrooms which students are familiar with and the time of course work are more flexible and more likely to change in need, while the final examinations are usually held in special places such as exam hall and they are set at the relatively fixed time and difficult and less possible to be change.

The course I will study in university

I will study accounting and finance in the university. From my perspective, accounting is one of the most popular subjects, playing a crucial role in government and business. Systematic financial record provides a full picture of the managerial and operational environment of the company. Moreover, accounting does not simply provide historic information about the business, its knowledge is of great value for individual investment decision because understanding of financial reports is an essential basis of analysis and estimation of a company. The great function and charm of accounting and finance deeply attract me and make me wish to learn it.

In addition, I was born in a family where both parents are running business. Under their influence, especially my mother, who is an accountant, I accessed accounting earlier than peers. In the meantime, I have studied mathematics and statistics for several years and got a great result in these two subject. Learning mathematics and statistics provides me a logical way of thinking and fosters my interest in Accounting and Finance, so I am determined to study accounting and finance under an academic environment.

At the first year that I have been to Britain, I studied Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics and Physics in A-level. At that time, I was confused to choose the course in the university, as I am not only fond of accounting and finance, but also enjoy the learning processes of statistics and other engineering courses such as Physics and Chemistry. One day, when I see my mother working, I decided to work as her in the future. I transferred to Business Foundation Programme without hesitation last year, since I believe that it is more relevant to the course I will learn in the university. During this year, I try my best to learn every subject. Fortunately, I got the offer from some universities that I really want to go to.

My Easter holiday

This holiday, I went back to my country China, because I stayed in the UK during the Christmas and I miss my family very much. There is a spring festival at the beginning of last term.

Victoria Harbor, HONGKONG

Victoria Harbor, HONGKONG

It is the most important festival in China, which stands for the beginning of new year at lunar calendar. Most family members go back home to reunite and have dinner at the eve of new year. However, I did not have a vacation at that time and due to the long distance far away home, I did not go back to celebrate. After the spring festival, my homesick feeling became serious, so I booked a plane ticket at that time.

I arrived at Guangzhou and transferred to Jieyang, a city near my hometown at 11 p.m. on 23th March. When I reach home, it is very late and I felt quite hungry. My aunt has already cook porridge with duck for me. It is one of my favorite food and it made me feel that my holiday starts.

On the first day of my holiday, I visited my grandparents. They were delighted and prepared lots of delicious food for me. They are worried and curious about my life and study in foreign country and I care for their health. We had a happy talk on the whole day. Because of the jet lag, I was tired on the first several days and insomnious almost every night.

I tried my best to wake up before 10 a.m., went to supermarket to buy fresh vegetables with my mom and help her cook delicious food. My mother is excel at cooking and it is a happiness that enjoy the food that my mom cook. When I live far away her, I always miss the food she cook, especially the soup.

Most of my friend are studying in university in other cities, such as Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, so I cannot meet them when I went back home, but I arranged to travel in HK for two days with two good friend at early April. On the first day in HK, we spend nearly one and a half hour to queue up and pass the custom. After that, it took us another hour to Avenue of Star by underground. Fortunately, it is sunshine. My friends and I had a great time to enjoy the landscape of Victoria Harbour. On the afternoon, we took peak tram to the top of the Victoria Peak and overlook the night scene of HK. On the second day, it is raining from midday. We went shopping whole day and finally we were too tired to move.

Happy time always goes quickly. I had to go back Britain on April 12th. I don抰 want to leave my parents but I did not cry in front of them since that I know that my parents are sad and anxious for me.

Reflect on CIT

We attend CIT class this term. In my opinion, this course is related to the knowledge about business and English. For example, it can teach us to organize the data in business when we study how to do an Excel, and it improves our English skills when we do a presentation. The purpose to study this course is to learn how to use computers to make business operation more efficient.

Some of the part in CIT is not difficult for me, such as doing a PowerPoint and writing assignment. However, the most challenge part for me is to do the excel and to make a blog. I seldom use excel before studying CIT, therefore, I am not similar with the process to make a excel. With the help of the teacher and my classmates, I understand a lot of the knowledge and feel confident to study well. At the same time, I enjoy the learning process.

What I need to know more is the skills about creating a blog, I will do it step by step according to the introduction on the CIT page of Studysmart.

As for the teaching, our teacher usually have a talk with us and teach us what we need to do and how to do it. And then he will ask us to do by ourselves.

Reflect on FES

FES is a compulsory course that students on foundation programme should learn every term. Although it take up less percentages than other subjects in the final mark, it is a crucial course which teaches us related skill that we can use in our study especially in university. There are a great number of differences and similarities between academic and general English study.

As regards the distinctions between academic and general English study, the most difference is their requirements of vocabulary. The requirement of Academic English is more rigorous than that of general English. For example, in academic writing, some of the easy vocabulary such as “good” should be try to prevent using.

I am keen on the study of Foundation English class since it also provides me the culture of the UK and help me study and live in Britain more easily. The largest difficulty for me is speaking since I am shy to talk with other people and get less opportunities to train my speaking especially the pronunciation. I asked help from my tutor and got lots of advises from her. She told me to speak slowly and focus on the end thyme. I hope I can make a progress with hard working.
